The Pearl -- Prereading

To prepare for beginning John Steinbeck's The Pearl next week, please give a thoughtful response to the question below, if possible during class on September 11, but no later than Sunday, September 13.

How would your life change if you suddenly acquired a fortune through an unexpected inheritance, a lottery win, or finding and selling a valuable artifact? Would it alter your life plans? Would you start to live your life differently? Would it change you as a person? Would it change your relationships?

  1. I think if this happened to me, it wouldnt change how I looked at the world, or how I treated people. Money corrupts, but I think that if it were me that got this money, it wouldn't affect me at all.

  2. I think if I acquired a fortune, it would make my life different. I would probabaly become a lot more materialistic becasue it's easy to get caught up in money. I would probably start buying more things that I don't need. I hope it wouldn't change my relationships because I wouldn't want people to want to be my friend just because I was rich.

  3. I think if i got a ton of money it would greatly improve my life because i would get everything i have ever dreamed of. It wouldnt change my relationships with people because it would not change my personality. I would still go to school because i want to experience the rest of my days in school and still have the chance to meet new people.

  4. My life would change, i don't think a whole lot because I would not put anyone down or think of them any differently. If I did get a fortune then it would alter my life plans because then money is not an issue when it comes to colloge etc... I don't think it is possible to not live your life differently because you look at things in a different way then what you used to when money was a problem. Nothing can change who i am and if I do change it would be because i am growing as a person. I would really hope that it wont change my relationships, I will try my hardest to not change them if they do start.

  5. My life would change if I suddenly acquired a fortune because I would be able to do a lot more things that right now cost a lot of money. No it wouldn't alter my life plans, I would still want to go to college just money wouldn't be a problem. It wouldn't really change me as a person because money isn't the most important thing in the world and I would be able to remember that, I would still be myself. It would not change my relationships because those relationships with family and friends are more important then money. Money is a material thing and could be gone like that, but family and friends will always be there and if I treated them badly I wouldn't be happy.

  7. I think if I won the lottery or inherited some kind of fortune I don't think I would change. It is very easy to be caught up in money and all the "stuff" you can buy if you have a lot of money. I am hoping that it wouldn't change my relationships because I wouldn't just want people to be my friend because of the money. I would probably want to do some fun things with the money and help others with it but I don't think my life would change drastically.

  8. To me, it would be very cool if I got happened to acquire a massive fortune. It would definitely alter what I do, but not my life plans. For example, I wouldn't need to beg my parents for money all the time, and I would be able to do things, like go to sport games, and be able to afford a car, and stuff like that. That is what I would do.

  9. I think that if I had suddenly got alot of money suprisingly I would spend it like it was going to rot. I would buy a big house, fancy cars, and someother junk that I don't really need. It might change my personality, but I would try to let it not to.

  10. If I acquired a large fortune, it would change the path of my life. My life would probably be made up of many material possessions; because it would be easier to purchase because of the fortune. If I had a fortune I would not want to end up like the people who get to caught up with money and become snobs. I would like to use a small portion of the money to help people in need. I would not like if it changed my relationships because I have real friends and if I had a lot of money, there is always a possibility that people will befriend you just because you have money.

  11. If this happened to me, I doubt that this would change my life plan. It may change the time at which elements of my life plan occur. I don't think that I would be a changed person, but I would be able to achieve my dreams much earlier than otherwise possible. I would improve my life, then the lives of friends, and then improve the lives of strangers through charity.

  12. If I got a bunch of money I would probably start to live my life differently. I would buy an apartment and a car, nothing special. I just wouldn't have to ever go to work, instead of spending it all on a huge mansion and stuff. But actually I would buy a sick car.

  13. If I was to acquire a fortune suddenly I think my life would only slightly change, but not for the worse. I think my life would be much easier, money is a problem in my family, and I also have a big family, so having a sufficent amount of money would probably ease the stress of day to day life. Although some things would be easier, my family is not together alot, although we are close, I think that having more money could make us more distant, or closer. It could make us closer cause people with a lot of money usually have a lot more time on their hands.

  14. Although I would be happy if I won a lot of money. It wouldn't affect how I lived my life because I would still kind of be the same person, but I think I would buy a lot more use less stuff or maybe...! Give to a charity but who knows. I don't think I would change my life plans but if I was living in a box or poor I might upgrade to a bigger box or get a job. I don't think money would take over my life or my relationships but I might become a different person and focus more on materialistic stuff.

  15. Well if i were to suddenly acquire a large sum of cash i would use it to buy a brand new car like the new SRT. Other than new merchandise my life wouldn't change at all my true friends would still be my friends and i would still have to go to school every day.

  16. If i was to get that much money I don't think it would change me much. I would start by putting in enough money in my collage fund to last me threw collage and medical school. I would probally not change much because I don't need that much money. I would just buy some things I need and want, but I would save most of it so I would have it when I really need it.

  17. I believe that if i required a fortune then my life would be much different than it is now simply because i would have more options. I would be able to afford a new place to live after i've moved out as well as a car. After that i would help change the rest of my familys life by giving tham money to life a better life without so many worries.

  18. If this happened to me, I would live my life differently in a very subtle fashion. I would travel and enjoy things, but I think the moment a person's life is too lavish, they lose who they are as an individual and material things begin to define them. I think it waould change my realationships in terms of other people's action toward me, but it would not alter my perception of relationships and other people.

  19. My life would probably become impacted hard. Although I would be rich, my life can go several different ways. Some good, and some bad. Usually, when you read stories about people who become rich, they become selfish, and their only remaining friends are just using him/her for their riches.
But I doubt that would happen to me, or anyone in that matter. My relationships with people would still stay the same no matter what would happen. I wouldn't even be in possession of the money most of the time, so people trying to use me for my money would be worthless. It would allow me to try things that your typical citizen cannot do a majority of their time.
However, it is more than possible that the opposite of what I just said could happen. There is no official way to know unless it happens to me.

  20. When i acquire a large quantatie of money my life will not have a large altering effect. This money would make my life easier. There would be no stress on making money. In the long run i would retire early, join a country club, and play golf every day.

  21. I think if I suddenly happend to find something worth a great amount of money, win the lottery or anything else. I'm not so sure that it will change much about me. Maybe i'll buy some expensive items. But I doubt it would change the way I was, things I belived in,how I treat people or how I acted around friends or family. I know that sometimes people inherit money or get rich and buy everything they want, treat people like they don't mean anything. I would never change if I became rich, yeah I would have money but I would spend it when I need it and I wouldn't spend it just to spend money.

  22. If I did acquire a large amount of money. The first thing i would do is to buy a wrecked jeep and rebuild it. I would use some of it to pay for college. It would change my adittude very little.

  23. If I suddenly acquired alot of money my life would deffinatly change, but I don't think who I am would change. I would spend the money on traveling because that is the best thing ever. Even though you can travel without alot of money, with it you could stay in alot of nicer places, and what not. Some times when people get alot of money they lose sight of what is important, to me my friends and family are most important and I would hope that no amount of money would change that.

  24. If I were to acquire a large amount of money I don’t know if I would change who I am but what I could do. Having money wouldn’t change the fact that I feel comfortable in jeans or that I care for my friends and family but with money I could give more or do more things, like if I wanted to go to get something I could go and get it without digging in the couch cushions for change. My morals are mine because of the experiences I have had. I won’t lose those values that I have because I got them from those I love and look up too. The more money you have the more your values can be clouded so I would like to think I will never stray from myself but I haven’t experienced endless money so I can’t judge those who have.

  25. I think it would chage my life plans and my relationsipd in the sense that I would be more generous. I don't think it would change me as a person because I wouldn't become so conceded with my self that I would be oblivious to the world.
